Flockhart

Speedy Ron Flockhart scored over 300 NHL points in the 1980s playing chiefly with the Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues. His quickness and anticipation made him useful on both the power play and penalty killing units.

Flockhart played a year with the Revelstoke Grizzlies of the BCJHL before spending a year with the WHL's Regina Pats. After scoring 130 points for Regina in 1979-80, he was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers. Flockhart adjusted quickly to the pros by scoring 33 goals in 59 games for the Maine Mariners of the AHL then registering ten points in 14 contests for the Flyers. He also scored a goal in three playoff encounters though Philadelphia was upset in the quarter-finals by the Calgary Flames.

The talented centre scored 33 goals as a rookie in 1981-82 playing on a line with Ray Allison and Brian Propp. The tricky pivot's tendency to rag the puck rather than move it quickly up ice led to the term "Flockie hockey." On December 6, 1981, he set a Philly record by scoring two goals in eight seconds during an 8-2 thrashing of the St. Louis Blues. Flockhart scored 29 goals the next season but the team needed a shakeup after losing to the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs in both 1982 and 1983. Early in the 1983-84 season, Flockhart was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the deal that brought Rich Sutter to Philadelphia to play with his twin brother, Ron. Flockhart scored 27 goals for the Penguins but the team struggled and finished dead last in the NHL standings.

Pittsburgh traded Flockhart to Montreal in November 1984 for John Chabot. His playing time was more limited since Montreal had Bobby Smith, Pierre Mondou, and Guy Carbonneau at centre. In addition, "Flockie hockey" placed the veteran forward in head coach Jacques Lemaire's dog house. His high point as a Hab came when he was brought out of the press box and scored a goal and an assist during a 5-2 win over the arch rival Quebec Nordiques to force a seventh game in the 1985 Adams Division final.

Flockhart found a new home in St. Louis after an off-season trade in 1985. He scored 67 points in 1985-86 then helped the Blues come within one game of the Stanley Cup finals. He played more of a defensive role the next season before his ice time decreased in 1987-88. After he was traded to the Boston Bruins, Flockhart only played four games in 1988-89 before heading to Italy. He scored 65 points in 31 games for Cortina that year, then spent two seasons with HC Bolzano before retiring in 1991.
